Core Courses are tagged with Core Codes at the course inventory level through the Course Inventory Management (CIM) system. These Core Codes will appear in each Course Schedule and in all official student records systems (including transcripts and Advisors’ Toolkit).
Departmental and college course inventory managers play an important role in the implementation of the Core Curriculum including:
- Ensuring that faculty have accurate standalone course numbers and titles for newly-developed proposed courses
- Assisting faculty in identifying a standalone course number when a single topic under a topics course number is proposed to be added to the Core Curriculum1
- Checking that Core Codes are accurately applied in the CIM
- Ensuring that a portion of the seats offered are open to all undergraduates. For courses that are restricted to a specific set of students, there must also be a similar course open to all students. (Ex. HDF 304 and HDF 304H)
- Communicating with the Core Curriculum Office changes to restrictive statements, course number retirements and/or replacements, departmental/college plans to remove a course from the Core Curriculum, as well as any other changes in the CIM to a Core Curriculum course number
CIM Rules for Core Codes
- Core Codes can be updated once a year during the fall inventory cycle to take effect the following fall
- No changes to Core Codes can be made during the spring inventory cycle
- The Office of the Registrar will ensure that inventory same-as, schedule same-as courses, and all topics listed under Core-approved base topics course numbers have the same Core Codes
Topics Courses and the Core Curriculum
In general, only courses offered as a standalone course number are approved to count in the Core Curriculum. There are a few exceptions to this policy, and the addition of a base topics course number to the Core Curriculum course can be beneficial in some cases and limiting in others. Contact us for a consultation as soon as possible and no later than published Core Course Proposal deadline.
1 We understand that an available standalone course may not be finalized by the Core Course proposal deadline. This is not a problem as long as the departmental course inventory manager is working with the staff in Official Publications and the Core Curriculum Office to ensure a number is assigned and correctly coded in the inventory.
